NIKKEI INTERNMENT MEMORIAL CENTRE

Just a few miles down the road from Silverton north on Hwy 6 you will find the Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre which is located in New Denver. The memorial reflects the story of the 21,000 people of Japanese descent who were placed in camps during the Second World War.

VALHALLA PROVINCIAL PARK

Valhalla Provincial Park

Valhalla Provincial Park is one of the treasures of the area which let one appreciate the beauty of this region. The park is in easy driving distance from Silverton and encompasses 30 km along the west shore of Slocan Lake. With it magnificent mountain peaks and many larger deep lakes, it will enrich your visit to the area. Numerous waterfalls add to the beauty as they drop down over a level of 2000 meter to the rugged shorelines of Slocan Lake whose elevation is only 537 meter.

A the lower elevation of the Park one finds a dense mix of cedar and hemlock species. Here you will find a wide array of locally common animals such as mountain goats, alpine ptarmigans and golden eagles. Valhalla Provincial Park is also the home to a variety of bears, including grizzly bears.

Pictographs on the rock bluffs overhanging Slocan Lake are reminders of former First Nations inhabitants and the history of the area. Logging flumes along the trails mark the passing of the local mining boom which brought European pioneers to this area a century ago. Valhalla Provincial Park is great place for hiking for beginner to expert hikers.

VALLEY OF THE GHOSTS

The area north of Silverton between New Denver and Kaslo is now known as the "Valley of the Ghosts". Where one once found striving silver mining communities, only traces of those remain. Today, Zincton, Retallack, Three Forks and Sandon are forgotten places of years long gone. Highway 31 A which runs from New Denver to Kaslo winds through the very heart of the historic Silvery Slocan mining area. Sandon was known as the "Silver City", as its prolific mines yielded millions in bullion silver. Today it stands as a ghost town, and yesterday is long gone. Take a step back into history and visit the old townsite of Sandon wander the streets and capture a sense of what it was like for BC's pioneers.
