Mount Revelstoke National ParkTo reach Mount Revelstoke National Park visitors can access the park via the Meadows in the Sky Parkway which begins 1.5 km east of Revelstoke. Mount Revelstoke National Park is 637 km (398 miles) from Vancouver. The Trans Canada Highway #1 passes through the southeastern section of the park. The park's main objective is to preserves alpine meadows and lakes and areas of marshland along side the Illecillewaet River Mount. The park is a place of contrasts taking the visitor through a variety of geographical zones ranging from dense old-growth rainforest of giant cedar and pine, travel up through sub-alpine forest, and finally alpine meadows and tundra. Similar in its geographical features to Glacier National Park, Mount Revelstoke is extremely beautiful, with the spectacular views of the ice-clad peaks of the Monashee Mountains and, to the east, the Selkirk Mountains. The Meadows in the Sky Parkway winds 16 miles (26 km) up to the summit of the 6,094 ft (1860 m) mountain, however, the road is only open in the summer.
There are over 64 km (40 miles) of trails in the park. By far the shortest but most popular trail in the park is the Mountain Meadows Trail, which leads from the south side of the Heather Lake parking lot at the upper end of Summit Rd. Another very popular trail is the The Giant Cedars hiking trail, which takes the visitor through a stand of 1,000-year-old red cedars. The Eva Lake Trail, an easy 7.5 miles (12 km) trail, which begins from one of the trailheads along the Summit Rd, climbs the flanks of Mount Revelstoke. Lindmark Trail is a somewhat longer but still moderate trail of 10 miles (16 km), which provide several resting spots along the way to Eagle and Balsam Lakes. By far the most difficult and challenging hiking trail within in the park is the 16 miles (20 km) Summit Trail. At the lover elevation of Mount Revelstoke the Skunk Cabbage Trail is an equally pleasurable experience. The trail leads through a fragile wetland home to the strange skunk cabbage plant and a stopover for migrating birds. Take this interpretive boardwalk trail for a 1.2 km loop over the wetland and an introduction to the local flora and fauna. Mount Revelstoke Park offers something for all. You may be a hiker, cross-country skier or just visiting for the day for a picnic your visit to the park will leave you with lasting memories. |
