Park and Tilford Gardens was established in 1969 as a community project of
Canadian Park & Tilford Distilleries Ltd. Tilford Park and its garden cover three acres of eight spectacular theme gardens. Each garden carries its own theme and is filled with flowers, fountains, waterfalls and aviaries.
The Rose Garden, with a covered arbor and Florentine pergola, has more than 25 varieties of roses, ranging from delicate miniatures to showy floribunda. Nearby, the Herb Garden, the smallest area, contains plantings of medicinal and culinary herbs. Some of the herbs that may be found in this garden are common and familiar such as lavenders and chives, others more obscure such as the ancient herb "Good King Henry", also known as "English Mercury". A small Pacific-style forest includes a footpath in the Native Garden; a quiet pond and manicured bonsai trees are featured in the Oriental Garden, its tranquil setting reminiscent of Japan. The authentic Japanese Tea House is a gift shop operated by the North Shore Association for the Physically Handicapped. The Flower Garden features 27 circular beds, which are changed frequently year-round. During the warm weather season a finch aviary among the blossoms compliments the overall scenery. A larger aviary can be found in the Colonnade Garden. The aviary is home for many colorful parrots, cockatoos, mynas and other tropical birds. On display in the Colonnade Garden are the busts of famous botanists Douglas, Linnaeus, and Menzies. Along the south bank, the Rhododendron Garden, sheltered by Douglas firs and dogwoods, provides a splendor of springtime color . In addition, there is the Bog Garden, which is a delight to view with its day lilies, skunk cabbages, ornamental grasses and a six-foot leafed Gunnera plant.
Tilford Gardens with its walls, fences, and twisty turny paths provide many secluded and tranquil areas and almost complete isolation in spite being located in a busy area of the city.
