Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Sun Yat Sen Garden

The garden honors the memory of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen revered by his compatriots all over the world as Kuo Fu, the Father of the Country. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, born in 1866, had visited Vancouver several times prior to his death in 1925. Set in the heart of Chinatown, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden is an oasis of peace and quiet. It is the only full-sized classical Chinese garden outside China. The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden is a five million dollar "architectural space" shaped by artisans brought to Vancouver from China.

The garden is constructed in an authentic Ming Dynasty-style. It is renowned as being the first of its type built since the late fifteenth century. Traditional materials from Suzhou, the Garden City of the People's Republic, were used in the construction. For the architect, the botanist, the student of history, the lover of beauty, this site provides insights into the subtle wonders to be found within the walls of this living treasure.

Sun Yat Sen Garden Sun Yat Sen Garden

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden presents a harmony of contrasts, of dark and light, solid and empty, hard and soft, straight and undulating, yin and yang. The object of the garden is to capture all the elements of the natural landscape--mountains, rivers, lakes, trees, valleys, hills-- and, by bringing them together in a small space. The relationship of these four elements reflects the Taoist belief in yin and yang--opposites that must be in balance to create harmony. Scholars in ancient China lived and worked in such gardens, inspired by the human achievement in architecture that is as remarkable as nature itself.

This place was created to be savored ever a lifetime.
